Frequently Asked Qustions

What gas stations should I not buy fuel from?

Exxon, Mobile, Esso. Some unbranded gas stations (independents, food stores, etc.) may purchase their fuel from Exxon Mobile. You can inquire with the attendant and inform them of this project.

Can I buy other stuff (milk, chips, etc.) from Exxon stations and mini-marts?
Yes. This boycott only applies to fuel.

What more can I do to help?
You can tell (email) everyone you know about this project and this web site, and you can put a link to this site on your site. To put a Exxoff Windfall Relief Project button on your site click here.

Hasn't this been done before - what makes you think it will work?
Two things. First - timing. After Exxon's profit announcement, people are up-in-arms. And Second - lack of any other agenda. We're not trying to make a statement about the environment, or politics, or the war, or education, or even gas prices. We're just simply saying we won't stand for this capitalization on the misfortunes of others.

Can I copy portions of your site to help spread word about the project?
You can copy any portion of this site. It would be good to refer back to this site, so there is common point of reference.

How can I send comments to the project?
Send comments to comments@exxoff.com. We welcome your comments, but please note that it is not possible to personally reply to each email. You should also post comments on your own blog or web site.

How do we know if it's working?
We will post the activity of this web site on a regular basis as an indication of how the project is progressing. We'll know more in three months, when Exxon releases another quarterly report.

What if Exxon Mobile lowers their prices to entice us to buy their fuel?
We will not buy their fuel. This is not a selfish attempt to get lower fuel prices, it is a grass-roots attempt to make a difference in the world.

Why pick on Exxon Mobile - other oil companies also had huge profits?
Only because we had to choose one - to flex our free-market muscle. Exxon Mobile was an easy choice because they were at the top of the list for profits.

How did you arrive at the $2.64 billion figure?
It's a figure that represents the difference between what Exxon's profits were for their third quarter in 2004 ($5.68 billion) and what their profits were for their third quarter this year ($9.92 billion), but we've excluded some Exxon profit ($1.6 billion) that came from a transaction that was not related to the hurricanes and the price increases.

Shouldn't Exxon be allowed to make more money this year than last year?
Normally, yes. But the cirmcustances of the gulf coast hurricanes would cause less greedy companies to keep their profits level, while simply passing through cost increases. They wouldn't make any less money. Exxon and the other oil companies choose instead to use the opportunity to dramatically increase their price and their profits.

What if Exxon Mobile agrees to pay the windfall donation?
Then we'll thank them for their generous donation and start buying their fuel.

Will this boycott end at a certain predetermined date?
No. There is no time limit. We will not buy Exxon Mobile fuel until they make the donation.

I know of a better organization then the Red Cross - can we give some to them?
The Red Cross is a well known and respected organization. We realize that they are not perfect, but don't let that distract from the message.

Who is behind The Windfall Relief Project?
It was started by Brice and Rand, but it's now a team effort.

What does everybody get out of this?
Nothing but the satisfaction that they've tried to make a difference.

Is there some kind of hidden agenda?
No. Read the Statement. There is no other agenda.
